Steven Moffat revealed at a Doctor Who Press Conference on the 21st of March that Coleman was to play Matt Smith as the Doctor's Companion after Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill and other actors have left the series. Moffat chose her due to the ease with which she worked with Smith and also because she was faster at speaking than Smith.
